Bunnying Down

Extrovirtual, which famously specializes in all things tiny, recently built a new shopping area open to other tiny creators in their sim (which is part of the Raglan sims). Here I am setting up my little E.Laval Tinies cart as Noramyr--one of Extrovirtual's founders and creators--helps...
Shady Fox (on the left) told me that Noramyr was super-tired after all of the building she had been doing to create it...And I got Lunar to bunneh down and come with me to the ArtWalk! OK, I love that artist's belt he has on...

Shoes to Nom For...

After the town meeting last night, Lunar and I decided to take a stroll through Seraph City, a dieselpunk-themed sim with a 1920s-30s deco flair to it. As we were walking by the Grim Bros. shop a cheery voice called out to us Steelheaders. It was creator Cutea Benelli...
If you have never met her it's a shame, as her personality could best be described as "ebullient." I love her perky bubbliness. After a great chat about creating and how she has been prepping for a baked goods themed show, she gifted me with an exclusive pair of shoes--the super-cute "Antidepressant Heels." Look at the little yummies all over it!Thank you Cutea! They are so much fun!

Adventures with Prim Feet aka Die Prim Feet DIE

I have a weakness for beautiful shoes and these were no exception, except for the fact that when I tried them on, they were shoes with prim feet. Now, I have avoided prim feet and shoes with them like the plague, but I was like "Oh well, they're nice shoes, I'll go for it." Don't mind my pose stand (which sinks my toes into it), I just wanted to fit them well and this is the basic skin color for them... I checked the options and there was not a way for me to easily do the color match way of tinting one's feet that I prefer, so I had to toggle dark, light and RGB +/- buttons. To get anything close to my skin color took the following clicks: 24 dark, 8 red+, and 1 blue + and even then it wasn't quite right as my skin has this lovely luminous realistic look that contrasted with the flat look of the feet...
And I'm not even going to talk about the fact that the shoes were no mod with no EZ sizing or way to adjust those cool black bands. Arrrrrrgh...I had to toss them back into my inventory as they're unusable to me. Well, I really did try. Damn! OK, my fashion moment is over, back to exploring and such.

New E.Laval Release: Seaside Summer Dress

Inspired by a favorite painting by Tissot, the Seaside is a beautiful flirty summer dress perfect for soirees or leisurely strolls. A slim silhouette, it comes with a sheer jacket with lace cuffs and sculpted bows, as well as a fluttery train and cascades of ruffles that flatter your every move.

It is available in Sky, Rose, Aubergine and Canary, as well as all four colors at E.Laval shops in Caledon Regency and Steelhead City.
Here is the painting that inspired it--"The Gallery of the HMS Calcutta"...

I've Got an Exhibit on Victorian Fashion! Yay!

Tomorrow is the opening of my exhibit "The Past Reimagined: Victorian Fashion and the Designs of Eladrienne Laval" at the Whitehorn Memorial Library in Caledon Victoria City from 1-3 SLT. You will get to see the process of how I work--from source images and sketches to the final product. It made me realize I've made a lot of pieces since I've started. The exhibit's just a fraction of them! With the help of head librarian JJ Drinkwater, I also put together an exhibit about Paris' first "couturier" Charles Frederick Worth, who elevated dressmaking to an art form...With library curator Siri Woodget's help, I put together an exhibit about one of Worth's patrons, Boston socialite Isabella Stewart Gardner, who was independent and bold and did things her way...
Here I am in the reproduction dress I created that uses a texture from the actual fabric. There will be a contest and a lucky winner will get to walk away with this dress tomorrow...
And yes, I did a tiny version! I don't know if most folks know that I have a history degree and was a graphic designer for years. I've found that really helps with the pieces I make and I always feel like I am still learning how to do something new. I love what I do. The exhibit runs until March 1, but I hope to see you all there tomorrow!

SL Blogger Swap: Guest Blogger Mykyl Nordwind

Today's post is part of the SL Blogger's 1st Mix 'n' Match blog swap. My guest blogger is Mykyl Nordwind ("Constructs of a Mind"), whose blog has a lovely literary style. Her topic "Deep Psychological Impact of What I Wear" was suggested by Katt Linden. Enjoy...

The question in its entirety left much room for interpretation I think and could have resulted in a very long post, so I have taken the liberty to simplify it a bit and just ask if there is a psychological impact of my choice of clothing in SL on myself. If you wish to wander some of the constructs of my mind, please come with me while I rez myself….

In the mists of twilight, I arrive – naught but a glowing silver cloud – undefined, unshaped, and unreal. I must become something or someone – must apply a face with which to deal with this world.

I must first select a gender to wear, or it must select me. Though most tend to select the gender they wear in the actual world (TAW), it is a choice – or sometimes an expression within us that refuses that choice. I choose my normal form, female – soft – needing to be held – needing to touch – needing to love – wanting to dance – nurturing the plants in her gardens.

Shall my skin be white, supple, soft – crying out for a hand to caress it – or shall it be dark, defined, hardened and strong? Shall my skin be coarse and dry, or shall I anoint myself with oil, calling attention to the curve of my breast as it sparkles in the sun?

And in what shall I drape myself? Shall I adorn myself with jewels and fine robes, place upon my head the crown of the Queene, or shall I hide behind tattered rags, expressing the smallness within me – the simplicity that wants to hide, but choosing a torn and patched dress does not? Shall I wear a dress that swirls when I walk, like dandelion seeds dancing in the arms of a zephyr, or like leaves whipped by an autumn wind to twist and turn in the corners – making haste to fly to the ground? Perhaps I should wear only leaves – let myself become the wind around which they turn – the desire at the heart of their dance toward death and decay – or maybe flowers – scented splashes of color begging the senses of those around to partake of me, to touch and to dance with me in the open air.

But no – I cannot be the Queen for she is beautiful and respected and I do not feel beautiful. Neither can I wear rags, even though it is in them that my self in TAW feels the most comfortable, for people tell me I am expressing too much of the darkness within me – that I should be seeking light and joy…. but I cannot dress in leaves or flowers either, for to be desired would be wrong too. I must hide this body, for it is filled with shame and does not wish to be looked upon – want desperately not to be desired or sought after.

I try on jeans and a sweater – but that drags me much to close to the actual world I have come here to escape… though it feels good to walk without shoes even as the snow begins to fly around me in the actual world. I must find something from the past or from the depths of fantasy to become – must run farther from the self that struggles through the actual world.

My mind begins to shred as the options fall. I stand naked on the shore of an ocean, my skin changes to blue scales, my eyes ignite with a yellow flame – my legs dissolve and are replaced with a tail as I become a mermaid and hurl myself into the waves – but still I feel wrong – still too human. With a scream I leap from the water and my body crashes on the rocks, flesh torn away, tail ripped to bits along with my heart as I am suddenly set free. I become wings and light – that which was a body is crushed and twisted by an AO – then thrust beneath the ground to be ignored by myself and those who pass – only a silver sparkle with filigree wings remains to be seen by the world .

No clothing at all – I am completely naked – without a dress, without skin – without shape or even gender… even the wings fade leaving only a glow of light. I am nearly back to what I was when I arrived, still undefined. Not to be seen, but also with nothing to hide. I am amorphous and free, though chained by my AO. Finally I feel like "me" and can go out to face others in this virtual world.

But then a friend tells me I really need to get out from under my rock. I blink my eyes, stunned a bit at the bluntness of her words, but then realize that she is right. I return to a mostly human form, clothed in a simple peasant dress. My bare foot tentatively touches the dance floor atop a mountain and pulls my body with it. I begin to turn, and my dress swirls in the wind, reminding me of wings. I sprout wings - gossamer tendrils of fairy flight - and I feel myself lighten. The dress feels too heavy with the wings, so I shift to a lighter and shorter dress. Still swirling in the breeze, but more free and light. The music clothes my heart, and I feel lighter still... I doff the dress and dance clad in nothing but flowers and wings, and the some in me makes me soar. This is much better than hiding under a rock ... dancing naked, not a hidden nakedness, but exposed to the sky and the trees and the wind and the world - clothed in the skin of my definition - clothed in the ideal that I know myself to be. I AM beautiful - inside - I just had to wear the right skin, the right flowers, the right wings - and the right thoughts in my heart.

No – Clothing has no deep psychological impact on me or my actual life – none whatsoever…

An Interview

I met publisher and agency owner Starlet Maximus for an interview for her SL magazine Black Pearls. I had a very nice time talking to her about being a designer inworld and my RL fashion influences and inspirations. She will be running a spread featuring my 1920s and '30s designs. I'll keep you posted about when it will be available...

Of Blue Skin & Moon Elves...

Anyone who truly knows me knows that when I'm not my steampunk kitty self, I shapeshift. Phin has said that he never knows which Elle he is coming inworld to. I love different skins and avatars and thanks to fellow Plurker Peter Stindberg, I am finally blue. I have always wanted a really pretty blue skin like this and I am tremendously happy with it. Even has freckles! Yay! Thank you Peter!Lunar is wonderful to me and I thought I'd repay that kindness by making a surprise for him. He had been talking about wanting elven armor. I've never made any before, but armed with RL references of Chinese, Russian, Japanese armor and medieval platemail, I decided to make a go at it. He, like I, was pretty amazed at how it turned out. It is named "Lunar Yugao" after Yoshitoshi's "100 Aspects of the Moon" woodblock engraving inspired by the Tale of Genji. A part of the engraving is embossed on the metal. I think it is one of the most beautiful things I have made in SL so far...

So Many Fashion Expos, So Little Time!

Those who really know me, know that when I shop, I shop big, so when I heard about two different fashion expos going on right now, I started twitching I was so excited! I first headed over to the SL Footwear Expo where I drooled over the offerings from Maitreya and Shiny Things and other designers. I picked up a new pair of cute wedges...The following day I went to the Beachwear & Lingerie Expo at Vanity Universe. I came inworld to an IM from Codie simply saying 'LMLMLMLMLM me!" If you love beautiful lingerie like I do, go ASAP! I really loved Carnal and Insolence. I ran into a bunch of my fellow Plurkers running around buying up stuff like crazy. I "might" post a pic in one if you ask nicely ;-)All I can say is that Hair Fair is coming up soon too. I am going to lose my mind...

So You Wanna Be...A Fashion Designer

Over a year ago, when I was a sweet innocent new resident (oh quit it with the laughter!) I took a class and made my first outfit ever (below) using the system sliders...I went from that to more sophisticated pieces in Photoshop with my own textures I created like this one...And this!My li'l sis Baube wants to create. Specifically, she wants to learn about building and fashion design. You wouldn't think the two are related, but once you start getting into making prim pieces like flexi skirts or sculpted sleeves/cuffs, yes! I build just as much as a designer as I do as a structure builder! Anyone who has seen or worn one of my Victorian bustle dresses can attest to that fact!

Of course, I'm going to be a good big sis and teach her, but for those of you out there who'd like to learn more about fashion design too, here are some really great tutorials I've found out there...

A lot of designers, like me, make their items mod/copy/no trans so that you can tweak the slider to adjust your clothes better. That especially goes for the prim pieces too! Take the time to adjust your pants for boots, or increase/decrease a prim part to fit you better.

It all starts with a template. Templates allow you to see the planes of the avatar and where the match points are, which are important. Here's an interesting tidbit: doesn't matter if you're male, female, furry or kid-sized...the templates are the same, so clothing will more or less resize to your body for you.

Robin Wood's clothing templates:

Here I am dressed in the upper and skirt ones:

Chip Midnight's clothing templates:
Some folks like using Robin's templates. Some like using Chip's. Both are fantastic.

So, how do you use them? Visit the following site and find out because Natalia Zelmanov explains the process very, very well! I can't rave enough about how helpful her blog is. She covers all aspects of creating inworld and her clothing tutorials are particularly good!

Clothes don't have to be hyper-realistic in SL, but quality touches like fine primwork, shading and texturing do count to your customers!

When you're done and you have saved your file (as a png or tga), it'd be nice to see it right? I once had it suggested to me to go to the Beta grid so I can upload pieces and see them before paying uploading fees for my pieces. Um, no. I love and use this little (free!) program that allows you to see the clothing on an "avatar" mannequin before uploading. SL doesn't even need to be open, which allows you to tweak it as much as needed beforehand: The SL Clothing Previewer by Johan Durant:

Uploads cost $10L/upload and voila! You've successfully gotten your clothing file inworld! Go to Edit > Appearance. Choose the clothing piece you want (ex. "Shirt"), choose your new file for the texture and ta-da! Play with the sliders to make sure it's what you want and save it. You just made a new outfit!

While inworld, check the search or schedules for New Citizens Inc. (NCI) for Basic Clothing classes. They're open to oldbies like us attending too! Everyone's new when they're learning something for the first time! I use Photoshop CS2 myself, although you can use other programs like Gimp for clothing creation. Be inspired, play around and have fun. Most of all, practice! You'll be cranking outfits out in no time! Good luck!

Baube is Back

"Hey heifer...lmfao" the IM said.

I had to look twice at the name. And then twice again. Baube Laval. Holy crap. My RL little sister was back inworld. Oh...my...

I found her sitting on top of a soda dispenser in her friend's apartment with a large bottle of Jack Daniels, looking noobtastic from head to toe. Her friend arrived from her hostess job and laughed as my sister jumped around like a madwoman on her bed. Baube, despite being a year old, hasn't been on in so long that it was like relearning everything...including the mystery of beds with MLP poseballs. "Ugh! Help me!" she said, and like a dutiful big sis we went out into the world. After she chose new shoes, new skin, new hair, new eyes, an AO and a borrowed miniskirt outfit from me, the makeover was complete. She really does look like she is related to me--as she does more or less in RL. And it's funny. In here she's shorter than I am too. "Yay! Twinz!" she said.

If she decides to stay inworld again, I'm sure she'll tweak her look even more. It'll be interesting. In the meantime...pray for me. I'll need it.

Dark Victorian Fashion Show

I had some pieces in the Dark Victorian's "Dark City" show today. I hadn't modeled before, so I was kind of nervous. I imagined somehow walking off the stage despite the anim or some other crazy glitch kicking in, but everything went really well!Lapointe & Bastchild were the headline designers, but there were also pieces from Lapin Paris, Fuschia Begonia, and Terry Lightfoot...
Afterwards, Dia spun goth tunes as we all danced...

All About the Bling Baby

Went over to Dia's for some inventory cleaning. While rooting through it (17281 down to 15848...dumping trash helps!) I thought I'd be funny. I actually had a hard time finding bling in there, but couldn't resist dressing up in a mainland style all too familiar to most of us. Ho-ly crap. It's amazing what a different 'do does. And yes...I can't even see my feet for the blinding sparkle. What makes it even worse? I have no shoes on...it is just foot bling! I'm going to go out in public like this as an experiment one day. Check this blog sometime in the future for it... Gryffin had joined us to quietly work on stuff too and went afk. He came back to this scenario and I think his glee was pretty...joyous. Oh man, you can't even see Dia's face for the damn foot shine! Speaking of feet...when will someone make better looking AV feet already? You can't be the hotness with jacked up feet!

Hot Tubbing Again

I have not found a dress for the big Winterfell-Caledon Ball on Saturday. I will probably make my own. In the meantime, I am threatening to go in this little Solange outfit I picked up:

My Menswear Shop

I realized I didn't announce my shop here in elinsl...

I sell really luxurious vests and clothing for men made with RL vintage and bespoke fabrics. They are "considered" Victorian/1800s, but would work well on a modern guy too. I've been seen around out in the world wearing them with jeans and boots, no shirt or a cami underneath, so they look really great on us women too!
I'll be opening a second one in Caledon Regency soon, and will also sell women's dresses, etc., next door there.
